Just because meat tastes good or is growing in popularity, it doesn’t mean that it’s good for you. Heck, it is often the case that something that actually tastes good for you is bad. Luckily, this is not the case with muskrat meat.
It is a meat that tastes good and holds a great nutritional value. This is just another of the many reasons that it is growing more and more people or that people consume it in the first place.
Muskrat meat is extremely low in calories, as for one ounce, you only face consuming 46 calories. Of those 46 calories, 47% will be fat and the remaining 57% will be protein.
This means you’ll get 5.8 grams of protein per one-ounce serving with 2.3 grams of fat. There is also 7mg of calcium, 78mg of potassium, and 1.4mg of Vitamin C.

What Does Muskrat Taste Like

How To Cook Muskrat
Muskrat, while it might be tender, fine-grained, and gamey, you can completely change that. And, this is through prepping and cooking. Preparing and cooking the meat in specific ways can and will provide different tastes.
That being said, there are a variety of different ways that one can go about cooking muskrat. Some might make it into patties like hamburgers where some will eat it like a stroganoff.
All that aside, it is more about the prep that makes all the difference in the world. Sure, cooking with different ingredients, spices, and herbs can certainly play a role, but it is the prep that’ll make the biggest difference.
This is why you’ll want to start most recipes, whether you are making patties or grinding the meat up, with soaking it overnight in saltwater. 1 tablespoon of salt water mixed with a quart of water is the way to go in order to reduce that gamey taste.
After soaking, you can remove the meat and start cutting or sawing it into sections. While doing so, you’ll want to be extremely careful to avoid the bone because bone dust causes more of a gamey taste.
Be sure to cut at the joint and then put them into a pot of 1-quart water, salt, pepper, and ½ an onion. Cook until tender and you’ll nearly be done.
Now, you want to remove the meat from the pot and fry it in olive oil until it is browned. You can add green peppers, onions, and mushrooms while frying to add a little more seasoning.
From here, you can even put water, Worcestershire sauce, and tomato paste into another bowl and let the meat soak in that for a few hours as well to add even more flavoring.
Muskrat might be a rodent, but it is one that can end up tasting pretty good when cooked in the right manner. Not only this, but it can provide nutritional value that’ll actually make you feel like you are eating healthier.
